The fan is very close to hitting the upper left part of the fan shroud on my 77 L48, auto trans. There is plenty of room the rest of the way around. My first thought was engine or tranny mounts, but I don't see any engine movement power braking, or when jacking under the engine. The shroud can't move farther to the left since the shroud is hitting against the upper radiator hose fitting on the radiator. There's no more upper adjustment either. Any ideas?
You have a collapsed or worn-out motor mount....probably the left one. Although, if you replace one, you should replace them all (including the tranny mount). If one of them is 'shot', the others are not far behind.
I'll check the core support, but it's a Savannah car and has very little rust. I thought about shimming the tranny mount, but I'll prob try engine mounts first, they are 35 years old so it's prob time to replace them anyway. I just wanted to see if there was something obvious that I was missing, thanks for the help.
Rubber decomposes from age and heat...even in Savannah. And, after thinking about it some more, I revise my "guess" to the tranny mount, because it will drop the rear of the drivetrain and raise the front.
Mine was hitting when i would get on the brakes. I now realize that i changed all the body mounts in the car, and a tranny crossmember from a 79 vette. I ended up putting in a 1?2 diameter fan and called it a day, never thinking to shim the tranny mount up.
