Ahh, and in here are a few guys that know a thing or two
What do you want to acomplish with the engines? Basic Rebuild, make more power, go nuts?
The book linked is the best one I've seen - and there's a DVD in it. That and a little friendly help will get you through it. Best to learn by doing...the devil is in the details.
Have fun!

In addition, you'll want books on the specific type of engine(s) on which you plan on working, and to that end there are a wealth of titles on SBC builds. I'm more of a BBC and BBB guy, so I'll leave the SBC experts to recommend the better ones.
And, if you want to fill out your library, do pick up a copy of Power Secrets by Smokey Yunick. Some of the info is getting dated, but he still knew more than most engine builders will ever learn. Also, suggest How to Build Horsepower, Vols. 1 & 2 by David Vizard.
Also, it will be worth developing a relationship with at least one reputable shop in your area, and IMOE you can learn a lot from them once you know what questions to ask. Highly suggest you not go it alone on your first build without having an experienced builder at least be available for guidance, if not looking over your shoulder. FWIW, I didn't jump right to building engines myself, rather I watched, then assisted, then began performing more and more work. IIRC by the 4th time around I was ready to solo, but it was a while yet before I got around to spec'ing out builds and designing custom cranks, cams and such, so definitely stay on the menu with proven combinations of readily available kit.
It'll take some time and effort to get to the finish line, but there are few rewards as fulfilling as is firing up your first build. Best of luck on your quest.
