just got back from the beach bum vette show.my 69 350 ran hot there and back.225 up to about 245.not sure if i burped the cooling system properly but did idle it with the cap off at temp twice.water pump and rad are less than 3 years .i did notice some of the tubes in the rad are not passing water when i have the cap off abd coolant is very brown for having just been put in.plugs show no signs of water but did look a little lean at idle.thanks again for any input.
How old are the hoses and cap? Did you open the heater system when you changed the coolant? If that was forgotten (and I usually do until after I've put the new coolant in ), it could account for the brown coolant. Check the fan is working as it should too.
Sounds like you have contamination in your cooling system. Flush, and refill with new fluid, and check to see if more arises. Can you see any corrosion with just the cap off? Also, what temp Tstat are you running, and when was the last time you changed it? And last, have you ever replaced your fan clutch?
Flush it until it clears up and I park my car on a step incline to burp it.A truck loading ramp at a factory works well. Pop the cap carefully and add water as needed.
Also I had a block come back from the machine shop and I removed the coolant drains at the bottom of the block. It was clogged solid. So don't think because they boiled it , it's clean....just sayin
