Well after mastering the art of the K5 Blazer, I figure I better try my hand at a C3  . I know next to nothing on what they go for and want something I can kinda return from the worn out/abused catagorey. I found a '72 Stingray convertible in Sunflower yellow with a slushbox. I've seen this thing for years down at a local bar by me. Its been driven in any kinda weather that you can think of, the owner doesn't seem to care. I made a quick look over one night and its got 123,000 miles, a 6" tear in the fiberglass near the exhaust and general little things that don't line up. I've never seen it washed or cleaned out, he had his golf clubs in there when I looked! What would be a good bid to shoot this guy on this tired '72, if he'll sell it that is.
assuming he'd sell at all, about 3k bux is about right, figger the car needs everything, maybe even including a frame and windshield/A pillar section...
rust can be astounding, from what you are saying, the car is probably toast...
Steve Johnson actually  My old man's a police Lt. , so I had him run a plate check on it. I shoulda copied down the VIN number, but it was dark outside. I'd be surprised if this guy even changes the oil in it. For the time being, lets just say it doesn't have any earth shattering options in it. Knowing my luck it probably will and I'll have to put up with this guy thinking he's a got some real winner and wanting $$$$$.
If all kinds of weather includes winter/snow......and if they salt roads in your area, use extreme caution re frame, windshield frame etc. If frame is shot, it would be worthwhile only as a project or as a parts car. If you want something you can drive and just work on bit by bit, make sure you check rust very carefully. If that part is ok, I'd agree with Alwyn678 that $10k for a chrome bumper ragtop is probably a good starting point, but could be well below that if car is really beat up.
If the frame is solid and most body and interior parts are in good shape. I would pay around $3,000 to $4,000 You can easily drop $5,000 to $10,000 in an old rotten car in no time.
If its in that poor of condition...no way I'm paying $10K for it (I got mine in excellent shape for $13K although it was 3yrs ago now, and OKC, OK isn't exactly the hottest economy in the world but I wouldn't think IA is either). I agree with some of the others at start up to $5 and work from there. Sounds like it'll take at least $10K if not more to get it where you want it. Time you start factoring in a nice paint job...all the suspension, potential motor tranny rebuild, etc it adds up quick.
Another option is to go find a nice Mid C3 since the prices are a little better than the chrome bumper cars. I do favor the chrome bumpers obviously...but if I could get an excellent mid to late C3 for the same price I'd do it, and then make it the way I wanted...as opposed to starting with a car in terrible shape. Just my $.02
