1972 stock SB. Apparently this 90 degree inlet sprung a leak at some point and Bubba sealed it with some cool copper colored putty. Effective and classy!
The carb is original - is this inlet original? What should I replace it with to maintain originality or is it repairable??
Possibly Bubba tried drilling a hole there, as I don't know of any hole there originally. I may be wrong, will have to look at my old quadrajet. I still have my q-jet and aluminum intake and in great shape. I replaced mine w/ an RPM Air Gap and 600 Edelbrock.

Here's what you have:
The forward passage plug on your carb started leaking. So Bubba drilled the plug out and installed a tall-profile bolt or screw-in plug into the hole and covered it with epoxy to get it to stop leaking.
The carb can be saved and made to look pretty good by removing the Bubba-fix and tapping the hole for a correctly-sized pipe plug (socket head configuration). The plug can be epoxied in place, and then milled off flush with the carb casting surface to remove the socket head feature and make it appear flush and smooth. (I can do that for you, too)
