So I've recently dropped-in a new ZZ4 crate engine, with hooker side exhaust, and the engine temp is running up to 220 within a few minutes of running at idle. I have the temp sensor in the original location, on the side of the block next to hooker headers. It appears to me that the heat from the headers may be affecting the temp sensor. The temp gun doesn't show the temp getting very high on top at the intake manifold and the radiator isn't very hot. I've replaced the thermostat to rule that out.
I'm wondering if I should move the temp sensor to the intake but I'm concerned that maybe there is a different problem and moving the sensor would give me a false sense that everything is ok. Obviously don't want to damage a new engine. Anybody else have issues like this or suggestions? Thanks in advance!
The original temp unit does not fit on the original location for the ZZ4. Temp unit is too big. You may have a smaller one that does not have the same Ohms as an original, therefore, an inaccurate reading. I put mine on the intake. It runs about 15-20 degrees cooler going through the intake than if you had it in the original block.

ALSO- consider that you didn't remove all the air from the water side of the cooling system. With air in the system, it will spike high and stay there even after the T stat opens. Make sure you've purged all the air from the cooling system.
My ZZ4 temp probe is in the intake manifold also. It never goes over 180 degrees.
