Shifting issues 1971 Corvette

I have essentially been re- building my 1971 Corvette for over 7 years. The project is going well and one of the last remaining problems is the shifting sequence and/or linkage. The car has a hurst shifter with a four speed Muncie (re-built during the restoration process). I followed the Hurst shifter alignment procedures, however it is still difficult to get the car into reverse. The most strange problem is that it seems that 1st and 2nd gear and 3rd and 4th are reversed. When I take off in 1st and shift into 2nd it is like I am shifting down, the same happens with 3rd and 4th.

Can somebody explain to this Saturday mechanic what I am missing or have hooked up improperly?

Did you install the shifter backwards? When shifting into reverse you should be going to the left and then up with the shifter.

Any chance the shift arms on the transmission are installed upside down?
