During my last drive I found my ammeter showing a pretty serious overcharge (16V). So, my thought is a bad regulator. When I went to disconnect the 2 wire clip on the alternator, I found the top wire had broken off where it enters the connector.
My question is...could this broken wire be the cause of an overcharge condition? (top wire black and white striped)
I'm hoping so... since the alternator/regulator checked out OK on a bench test.
Yes, that's the 'voltage sensor' wire that lets the regulator know the car's system voltage. Since it was broken off, the regulator saw no voltage in the system and called for full charge condition.
