Having some start up problems with 1978 corvette. When I first got it last year, it had the normal - three pumps in the morning and you are good to go.
It got to a a point where:
Need to pump once to open choke, pump six times for gas, engine start then stall, pump twice then go...
Now it is at a point where:
Pump once to open choke, pump six times for gas, turn engine, pump 6 more times, turn engine, pump 4 times, engine start, then engine stall. Pump twice then go...
I recently changed the fuel hoses, fuel filter - did not solve the problem.
Any suggestions on how to continue troubleshooting this?

Hi and Welcome,
The hoses from the tank to the fuel pump are molded, store bought gas hose can kink in that spot. Did your problem start after you changed the hoses?
Are you handy? Can you see if the accelerator pump is working.
Are you sure the choke is set correctly?
Lars is the expert on carbs, here's a post on your problem.
An important piece of information is missing here, such as how many days has the car been sitting between starts. The carburator bowls, hold gasoline, but after a few days it evaporates out, leaving things dry. The car takes much longer to start this way. If the car's driven daily, should only take one accelerator pedal pump to set the choke, and give the carb an enrichment fuel shot. As mentioned, make sure the choke is functioning properly, and maybe time for a minor carb refresh, with a new accel pump.

My Q-Jet Tuning Paper has an entire section devoted to the causes of hard start problems on the Q-Jet. All you have to do is e-mail me a request for the paper and read the hard-start section.
Sorry, close choke is what I meant. In a discussion with another vette guy - he mentioned the same thing and I took a look at it - works perfectly normal.
While the new fuel hose is not as such a 'custom' fit as the old one - it does the job it's supposed to.
Emailed Lars on the hard start paper - thanks for the input guys!
