I am trying to remove the console on a friends 1981 coupe. I have removed the front screw for the side panel and I can see the head of the two screws that hold the front of the consloe in place, but I'm not sure how the rear part of the console is held in place. By the rear of the console I mean the end by the emergency brake. I am trying to remove his heater/AC controls and the book says to remove trim plate, but I can't! Thanks for any help.
To start out with it is much easier to do if you remove the seats first. But if you want you can wrestle around them.
There are three screws that hold the carpeted fiberboard on each side. Remove them and the sideboards.
Then there are two screws that go from the console plate to the center gauge panel, going from the bottom up.
Then there are two screws that go from the e-brake cover to the console plate, going from the bottom up.
Then there are screws from the side of the console plate to brackets. Some cars I had seen with one one each side, others with two on each side.
Unscrew the shift **** and cigarette lighter and you should be able to swing it up to get at the screws for the heater control.
Good Luck
My '69 has a bolt holding the rear console in place. If you remove the storage bins behind the seats and feel around....you'll find it. It's a tight space and not much fun to remove or re-install. Make sure you do everything right the first time because you won't want to remove that rear bolt too often.
No, you don't have to remove the console to remove the center gauge panel.
You have to remove the front screw on each side of the fiberboard an gently fold them back to allow acess to the screw that go from the console plate to the center gauge panel. One one each side going up from underneath.
Then remove the four screws that are visable from the front of the gauge panel (one on each side and two along the top).
Then remove the radio ***** and the nuts on the shafts. (requires an special socket from snap-on or if you are careful you can make a screwdriver work)
Be VERY VERY careful as you pull the center gauge panel out. There is a light socket on top of it and it can catch on the dash and crack it. It works best to try and push the panel down before you try to pull it out.
Once the gauge panel is out there is a brace on the right rear of the radio that has a nut that needs to be loosened and the radio will come out.
