Default Side Exhaust

Going to make the switch from Hooker sides to factory style Side exhaust. After 3 years, I can't take the noise anymore when cruising, and don't want to go to the reverse flow mufflers and kill all the power I just added over the winter.

I have a SBC, and still have the original manifolds if I need to go that route. But concerned about significant power loss by going to the stock manifolds.

How big of a ball-buster is it to mate headers with the chambered exhaust, and is there a kit or instructions somewhere on the forum?

What style or type of headers works for this application?

Thanks for any suggestions. Oh, if you want some clean but a little blued Chrome Pipes, send me a PM.

Well I have factory style side pipes on my 75 small block with shorty block hugger headers that are ceramic coated into the factory style pipe and covers. Kind of suck I just ordered my new hooker style side pipes an hour ago. Where are you located. I can get pictures of my setup tomorrow if you need them for reference

I've been using these for many years. Hedman 68280. They dump out toward the side exhaust at the exact angle to connect to the stock side exhaust muffler.
No clearance issues, steering box, clutch cross shaft, motor mounts, etc.

You still need to cut the stock side exhaust muffler pipe and weld on the collector.

If you want to stay with headers, McJacks sells a set that are meant to hook up to sidepipes (looks like they are the ceramic coated version of the Hedman Hedders Barry's70LT1 posted):

Thanks Barry, looks like the way to go. Not afraid of cutting or welding to get the right performance, sound, and look.... Rob

Good stuff, glad I asked before I ordered the factory setup. Can't tell by the description on Summit of Hedman, but the McJacks are 1 5/8 tube diameter, a the Hookers are 1 7/8. What are the Hedman's? (Guess I could just call and ask).

Many thanks...Rob

I used Hedman side exhaust Jet-Hot coated headers and stainless steel Sweet Thunder early C3 style sidepipes on my 80'. I have the fiberglass covers, but haven't installed them yet.

Sweet Thunder in Michigan builds the factory style side pipes without the tube from the header to the muffler allowing you to fabricate your own. These are made for those that have aftermarket headers.
I just installed the facory style side pipes on my 81 with the stock manifolds, they sound incredible. Can't wait to get it back on the road and hear them while driving after I finish the front seal, balancer and pan gasket job.

I hope you can open this link. I installed 67 side pipes on my 78 Vette. At first I had them mounted to the stock manifold. Wasn't that hard. Pipe drops down about 10", 12" and 90* towards the outside of the car. All the mounting holes are there. Dose your state vehicle inspection? If so you may have to do the welding yourself. Now I have the sidepipes connected to Hooker shorties/hugger headers. Use a 10" flex pipe on each side so you won't crack the collectors. PM me and I'll send you more detail pictures

I have Sanderson shorty headers and Sweet Thunder side exhausts. Had a local muffler shop connect them up. I was concerned about restriction in the exhaust when I bought the mufflers so I went with ST's bigger diameter units. They work well but when I pull into the garage it rattles the glassware!

Default block hugger header or in there an alternative?

I'm doing big block swap in my 70 convert. I'm planning to use sweet thunder side pipe mufflers with my 69 covers. Are block hugger headers the best alternative for making the connection or is there a better idea for the BB?

Also, is there an alternative to a stock intake or a Torker II to fit under a stock BB hood?

Barry do you have a big or small block?

Stainless Works makes big block headers for side pipes:

Hedman also makes the side exit style for Big Blocks. I have them on my car. They fit great. I have the painted version and they were about $149.

I checked these this morning. The price is $185. The part # is 68210

I understand and have the same budget problem.

The painted Hedmans are a good deal but you will probably have to take them off and paint them every couple of years. You might consider the coated version of those Hedman Hedders. It's another $290 but they hold up longer and the coating cuts down on engine compartment heat. They are listed as 68216.
