Wheels on the 81 are neglected and abused...have them off and with tools and elbow grease will remove major flaws and polish them up...Now the question. Will I need to clearcoat them? If so, is there a best brand? I have done lots of car things for 40 years, but never this. Always eager to learn. Thanks in advance. Stevo
If you don't clear them...you'll have to polish them very often. I just had my wheels refinished. They are clear coated and look great. I just hit them with a hose and mild wheel cleaner...then wipe dry.
don't put a clear coat on it.. it will turn yellow over the years and fall off just like the previous clear coat did.. i just sanded mine, then polished them.. they look like chrome.. you just have to polish them more often then if they were clearcoated

There are different ways of clearcoating....where I had my rims refinished they use a powdercoat clear not a "paint clear". Very durable stuff and warranteed for life against yellowing/cracking. Obviously painting them in your garage is not going to yield ideal results. My factory rims had over 100k miles on them and still looked respectable but I wanted them new looking. If they didn't have a clear on them I doubt they would have looked that good since the previous owner was not into washing his car. Me....I'd rather spend my time driving than polishing. :jester
