Default crocus cloth

Hi everyone, I'm rebuilding my calipers and my book says to cleanup the bores using "crocus cloth". I am having a hard time finding it at any of the stores i've tried and am wondering if there is an alternative such as emery cloth that will work without ruining my calipers. my calipers are stainless sleeved and are in pretty good shape, I would just like to polish them before installing the new seals.

Crocus cloth is finer than emory cloth, and designed for polishing.

3M makes it in sheets. I would check with an "industrial supply company", basically a hardware store for manufacturing plants and contractors. If you can't find it locally, email or call 3M, and ask them where you can get it.

Crocus Cloth is EXTREMELY fine - Emery cloth WILL be coarser - and I wouldn't recommend using it. I would clean them up with brake solvent and see if you have consistent wall finish - and if so, leave it. Typically, lots of use will wear a shiny ring in the area where the piston rubs. Even a little shininess is likely OK if there is not ridge - that's the evil one!

If you know anybody who works at a machine shop, they have stuff like that.

Keep the shiny side up!

You can just use a scrubby with solvent, water if need be, like the green that is common, but white is a lot finer.
As mentioned, it's purpose is just to polish lightly.

#0000 steel wool. It is not as hard as stainless. I use it to polish chrome.

I have some, if you message me your address I'll send you some. I use it in the machine shop for different things. I also use it for action jobs on guns.

I agree you can likely use an alternate type of abrasive for clean up. One thing I do know about crocus cloth, is it's really tough stuff. Used it as a kid, to sand rough rocks smooth, for collections.

A sheet of it lasts a long time. It has something in it that acts like a polishing compound that puts a very nice finish on metal.
