The a/c on my 81 never has worked since I bought it a year ago. I decided to look at it the other day and see what was wrong with it. First thing is there is no freon in it. Everything seems to be there and in place. You can hear the doors open and close behind the dash. I pulled a vacuum on it yesterday and it held until I disconnected the gauges 7 hours later. I know it could still have a leak when it pressures up but holding a vacuum is a good sign. Now, should I track down some r12 and try it or convert to r134? I have heard good and bad about converting these systems and heard of many ways to convert them. So should I keep the r12 or should I convert to r134 and what's the best way to convert?
UPDATE...I located 3 cans of R12, pulled another vacuum on the system and let it sit for an hour just to make sure it held. I put one can of R12 in then started the 2nd can and the compresser didn't kick in. I then remembered when I changed the interior to black I didn't hook the wire harness to the a/c control because the a/c didn't work anyway. I connected the harness and the compresser kicked in. I put the other 2 cans of R12 in and the a/c blows cold.
