Look at how the starter is mounted...
If it is by 2 equal length bolts staggered, it has 168 teeth.
If bolts are one long/one short and are inline, it has 153 teeth.
My Tranny Guru at Great State told me Basically a Automatic has 153 teeth, smaller bell housing. & a Manual will have 168 teeth, larger bell housing. Made sense to me.

I think your guru is confused. I have bought two flexplates in the last couple years. one for my 76 vette 350 and one for my 78 gmc truck 350. Both were 168 tooth.
Now when I installed a new flexplate on a 305 out of a 1986 camaro, that was a 153 tooth.
And we wont even need to discuss the diff between a flexplate and a flywheel - Automatic and a manual.
