Default driver's dash panel interference with stg col

I took apart the complete dashboard of my 1977. I started the installation process with first the dash pad (instrument panel upper pad) and then driver's side lower dash panel. After 4 attempts I keep ending up with 2 problems installing the driver's dash panel - the bracket welded to the steering column hits the bottom of the small bracket supporting the bottom of the speedo (#1), and secondly, the odometer zeroing cable is jammed against the upper steering column bracket (#2). Also, the left side A/C outlet duct is touching the hood release bracket.

I think that the bottom of the panel is too high but it doesn't seem to me it could come down any further because the panel's collar area is already scrunched against the steering column. What am I missing, what have I overlooked? What path should the odometer reset cable take when it exits the speedo?

did you drop or loosen the steering column? i can only assume that you did inorder to remove the lower dash. if so, i think you have the column positioned incorrectly. i see that the oblong adjustment slots have the bolts all the way to one end. read jim shea's papers on column allignment and your problem may take care of itself.

Thanks for your quick response. Yes, I did drop the steering column. I made sure that the column went back in its original location. I had marked the bolt locations. I noted from my pre-disassembly photos that the bolts were all the way to the end. I will read the paper on column alignment and remove the panel once more.

Any advice as to the path the odometer reset cable should take to avoid the column's bracket?
