I bought this balancer http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performan...ductId=1679266 and installed it on my 350. I put the timing tab on and can't see the numbers. The tab covers them because the numbers are in the center of the balancer. Any ideas. Do they make a different tab or should I get a balancer cover with the markings on the edge of the balancer.
TimAT is right on the money. Make sure "0" is ZERO!!
I had trouble seeing my marks so I crawled under the car while on ramps with two oil based paint pens from a picture framing shop here in town. One was white for "ZERO" and one was red for where I wanted to be. In my case I had to set the base timing for the Mass-Flo fuel injection to 14 BTDC. So I marked my red paint pen there. In your case I would mark zero in white and 5 mark increments in one color and 10 mark increments in another from zero. Draw your mark across the entire face of the damper.
Good Luck
I put one of the adjustable pointers on mine. Works well for timing, but when I put mine on I had trim the mount a little because of the billet timing cover. If it wasn't for that,..it would have been a bolt on deal.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
If it's the kind of timing tab I'm thinking about what I did using a cutoff grinder was remove the upper portion of the tab right down to the 0 degree mark and I could see the timing marks on balancer.
1. This HD may be smaller than your stock HD; if so, you'll need a timing tab for the smaller diameter damper.
2. The TDC mark on this new HD is 10 degrees CCW from the keyway. If, according to John Z, all corvettes have the TDC mark inline with the keyway, you'll need to affirm that your timing tab lines up with the TDC mark when the #1 piston is really at TDC.
3. Just use some snips to cut back the timing tab to a single point to align with the TDC mark. Forget about the serrations and markings on the tab - you won't be using them anyway since the degrees are already marked on the HD.

That's a great point, the numbers are on the dampener, so if you want to be cheap and functional, (which is what I would do) then just cut the tab back to where you can see the numberws on the dampener, and grind a little notch tthat lines up with 0 degrees at TDC on #1 cylinder. Done and done!
