Default starter wire (S)

Help, I would like to know where the small (s) wire on the starter silenoid leads to, is it the neutral safety switch? Thanks

Kind of confused here because new starter does not have the third terminal for wire going to distributor..

I'm not sure that will work with a points ignition.

77 would not need or have the dist wire from the starter. The purple wire comes from the neutral safety switch and goes to the s terminal on the starter.

Oops, I thought you were the original poster. Just leave the R wire at the starter unhooked and tape it back.

Your 71 originally had 2 wires to the + side of the coil. One from the starter "R" terminal and one from the ignition switch. THe one from the switch has a resistor in it and can't be used with HEI. The one from the starter suppled a full 12v to the coil for engine start and is normally not powered, although it does have 12v fed from the coil+ connection when the key is on.

HEI requires a 12 ga wire from an ign source such as the ign tap in the fuse box. Do not use the resistance wire that was powering your old coil because it won't provide enough power to the hei. As Tim said, the other coil wire that used to go to the starter R terminal is not used either.
