Now that my tranny (auto) is back together and working nice and smooth, it started to make me think about a shift kit. I know virtually nothing about these things. Can you guys fill me in... what is their purpose, easy to intall? price $$$$$....
Since it sounds like you have a fresh rebuild on your tranny there, the ONLY shift kit that's worth a damn is Trans Go....for your tranny....
any other kit just doesn't seem to have it....not my experiences, and not from other guys here either....
it will NOT cure a sick tranny, but one that's fresh....go for it....
costs more...but worth it...I had a 400 tranny go well over 350,000 miles and still caught rubber into second....no lie...3rd wouldn't quite do it anymore, but what the hell,.....
My TH350 looked like it was untouched with its 150k miles. It had no obvious problems (other than some nasty trans fluid).
I've been very happy with the results of my B&M Shift Improver kit. Some prefer Trans-Go. If you go with B&M, I used the HD/Towing setting, but I'd recommend the Street Strip.
Kits provide crisper shifts (less torque loss) and the ability to up shift or down shift to any gear at any RPM. A stock auto trans will eventually shift, when the pressure builds, if you leave it in first gear. I went with the B&M Transpak set to Street/Strip and it shifts hard. Tires chirp in 2nd and 3rd gear and it's a blast. I had my trans rebuilt and had the kit installed it at that time.
1. A shift kit should extend the life of a healthy trans because, by reducing the factory built-in slippage, heat is reduced and heat is a big factor in trans life. So, a shift kit is both fun and a good thing :yesnod:
2. You may want to put an adjustable vacuum modulator in when you're down there. It's an easy, cheap (~$12 from local auto parts) mod that lets you adjust the shift points up or down the RPM range.
Put a B&M in my 81 and it works like a dream. I used the street and strip combo and it sure does provide a nice positive shift gets a little chip shifting from 1st to 2nd . I had to get the TransPak because of the TH350C tranny. So if going with the B&M make sure which Tranny you have first.
