Just purchased my first vette. Love it but the passenger window crank broke and the driver side is difficult to roll up so I might as well replace both. How difficult is it to replace the crank and mechanism and how expensive? I also need new weather stripping around the doors and windows. Got a mini shower last night driving in the rain.
Hi m73v,
WELCOME!
New, old, 73 Corvette, and first post!
If you could describe your symptom a bit.... did the handle come off in your hand?, does it turn but nothing happens?, does it make a grinding noise?.
The handle itself attaches to a small gear box which operates the mechanism that lowers and raises the windows. A bit more info may help someone give you some guidance on what's happened and how to proceed.
The weather-strip on the door, and around the 3 sides of the window, can be replaced. Again some more info as to where the leak seems to be might save you from replacing all of it.
The 2 problems MIGHT be connected... if the windows aren't adjusted properly and closing fully, that might be the cause of your leaking.
Regards,
Alan
You will most likely just need to open up the doors and grease the window mechanism. The manual windows last a good long time.
Use white lithium grease. Remember to not let any grease get on the window wiskers.
The clip or pin that goes with the handle to attach to the gearbox is missing and the window is difficult to roll up on the driver side. The window may need adjusted and the mechanisms greased to take care of the problem. Thank you guys for your responses!
