Default T/T column question...

Hi Guys
My 70 Vette with Tilt and Tele column quit locking the telescoping feature. I have pulled it down and can see nothing wrong.... But I also cannot figure out how lock rod, etc works. All the parts are there, replacing upper bearing while it's apart.
Did something break, wear out, or ???
Appreciate any help or insight !
Thanks, Keith

I am going to suggest that all you needed to do was adjust the telescope feature of your T&T column. Since it did work and stopped locking properly without any assist from yourself. The following is a blowup of the locking feature. Underneath the horn cap (1) are three screws (2), that hold the horn contact (3) and shim(s) (4). Now you have access to the telescope locking lever (7) that is attached to the star screw (6) by two small screws (5).

Remove the two small screws and you should be able to use a large phillips screwdriver to rotate the star screw in the clockwise direction. Tightening the star screw should tighten the telescope feature and lock the upper shaft in place. Leave the star screw in the locked position.

Now take the locking lever and rotate it underneath the star screw so that the finger bump is in the 1 o'clock position. Use the two small screws to attach the lever to the star screw in that position. You should now be able to use the lever to rotate the star screw CCW and CW. Alternately locking and unlocking the telescope feature. You can remove the two small screws and further adjust the locking lever to the star screw (by using your big phillips screwdriver) if your first attempt isn't succesful.

BTW, all Saginaw telescoping columns and tilt & telescoping columns all work in the same way (regardless of year).

The following cutaway drawing shows the locking rod that the star screw presses against. The rod pushes on a small wedge that ***** and locks the upper shaft to the lower shaft. Taking pressure off of the rod, (by rotating the star screw) locks or unlocks the telescope feature.

Good luck,
Jim
