Default temperature gauge issue

My temp guage went to red line and stays there - ignition on or off.
Engine is 1979 late L48. Have checked temp at the thermostat housing - 185 to 190. Anyone familiar with this? Don,t know what to do beside replacing the guage? Appreciate any help.

the first thing to check would be the
wire from the sensor. located just under #1 spark plug it might be unplugged or broken.........that would be the first place to look....
if plugged in try removing the wire and see if the gauge responds...

If the gauge responds replace the sensor......

unplugged it & re-plugged it. Guage didn't move - stayed at redline

You still could have a wiring issue. What happens when you ground the end you took off the sender unit? If open moves the gauge needle to the right, ground should move it to left. Or visa versa?

Also, check the sending unit with an ohmmeter, cold and hot. Should be a difference.

Roger had done a lot of research and testing on this issue. Do a search for more information.

Grounding the sender wire should send it to max straight away with the ign on.

Possibly you have a problem with the sender wire eathing somewhere.

Also the gauge stays at whatever setting it last had till the next time it gets power etc (at least mine does 71)

I wonder if it could have been earthed out then the needle has got stuck somehow.
