I could use some suggestions on sound systems for a 76. Both head units & speakers. But the biggest thing is a do not want to rip up my dash. Any ideas?
Hey,
I just went to my local audio store last week searching for a nice unit that fits an original look, to put in my 76'. The salesman showed me some nice units that really looked great, exact size and look of the original radio, but with all the options of new high end equipment: high power, preamp out jacks, CD changer connections faders ect. They even had a nice Corvette label on the panel, available with black or chrome faces. The prices ranged from 200$ to 300$ for the decks. I will buy the new kenwood model with the 6-disc changer, for 600$, and adding an amp will really make my Vette rock. That hole behind the seats isnt good for anything else except for tune equipment. If your local a/v store doesnt help you, call "Sound Pro" of Rapid City, SD. 605-348-6161. If they dont give you good response let me know and I will stop in there again, and get more info to send you.

Listen to those systems before you buy. I have an aftermarket Kenwood in my car and it is a piece of crap. Says corvette on it and has the bowtie on the tapedeck door. It was in the car when I bought it so I don't know much about it except that it distorts regardless of the speakers. (i tried a pair of portable speakers to test it.) It might be ok if it had a preamp. Let us know how the thing works.
I'm going with a not too flashy fosgate mp3 silver deck in my 76, alot of that new stuff won't look right in the old interior IMO. I'm sacrificing my space behind the seats to have a pressure fit enclosure to house 4 6.5" precision power studio midbass drivers and 1 10" solobaric square L7 subwoofer, behind the box will be an autotek mono amp with remote gain to run the sub 750 rms, precision power amp to run the mids and highs 360 rms, I am taking out the 4x6's in the dash and drilling 1.25" holes for my mb quart tweeters and putting a dash cover between under the tweets but my dash is a little cracked anyway. I'd recommend Infinity kappa 4x6's and 5.25's if you want a simple system, but they sound much clearer with an amp behind them.
I just had my factory radio converted over to new high-tech guts. I added a portable CD player from best buy to round it out. So I have a totally factory looking stereo with awesome sound. Will post pictures later, but check out this site:
