Default 700R4

I had my converted over to a 700R4 with a 2000 lock up stall converter.
I had a transmission shop check and adjust the throttle valve cable Thursday.
We bent the bracket on the carb to give the cable a straight shot and then adjusted the cable at the top only.
Now my car will not shift from 1st to 2nd gear until 27mph and from 2nd to 3rd until 47mph no mater how gently you drive it and overdrive will not engage at all.
I have tried sliding the cable forward and backward in the lock but it does not help this.
The transmission is all brand new with quality parts and shifted like it should only a little soft and overdrive worked great before I had this shop adjust the cable but now even moving the cable does not seem to help the shift points or overdrive.javascript: DoInsert(' :confused: ');
Any ideas what to try?

Thanks for all your help.

I've learned a little bit about the 700R4 since installing one into my '80.
Regarding T.V. cable adjustment, the ultimate goal is for the T.V. actuator to be JUST touching the plunger at idle and for the actuator to fully depress the T.V. plunger at WOT.
The trick is getting the geometry of the non-700R4 compatible Q-Jet throttle linkage to to accomidate this requirement.
Mine is still not perfect. I have it right on the money coming off idle but the T.V. gets bottomed out before I reach WOT. Therefore, I CANNOT reach full throttle at this time. I will get it worked out, just lots of trial and error. Bowtie Overdrives.com sells an adapter that can help you come close to getting it set right.

Basically, your T.V. cable is TOO tight for proper light throttle shifting right now. This is causing your line pressure to overwhelm the governor (governor thinks your deep into the throttle so it is causing the trans to hold longer in lower gears to assist in the percieved acceleration.

At least your current problem errors to the safe side. This is better than not having enough T.V. applied (low line pressure causing slippage) for a given amount of engine torque being applied.
The best way to see what is going on is to connect a pressure gauge to the transmission. You can then see exactly when the T.V. is actated by cable pull to insure it happens instantly off idle. Other than that, loosen it up a little at a time for now til it starts feeling right to you.

Hope I didn't complicate things for you but I've been through the same thing. There are a LOT of 700R4 converts here on the forum that have cultivated a wealth of knowledge on the topic.

I've always heard that if your 700R4 is shifting WRONG. . . it won't shift LONG!!!
I just got mine back from the builder.

Thanks for your input.
I have the half-shafts out today to replace the u-joints so when I get those in Sunday I will try to let some pressure off the cable as you suggest and see if that helps.
What you said makes sense because I told the guy it was shifting to softly and was afraid there was not enough pressure so he probably did what you are describing.

Thanks again for you help

Check out http://www.700r4.com/ I believe they have the directions for TV cable setup on the web site, if not let me know and I'll type it out for you. It's not hard, just takes a little time to get it right.

Here's a picture of the BTO cable & bracket http://www.c3sharktank.com/tech2/383project/done08.jpg

I have just gone through this whole ordeal. From your sig you are running a Holley carb. You need to get one of these geometry correction adapters.

These allow you to get more TV at lower throttle settings.

These guys also make a spring setup that will allow you to max out your tv earlier without messing up the cable. Its a spring that fits into part of the linkage.

I would be real careful about putting many miles on that car until you get a chance to correct your TV geometry, the last thing you want to do is urn up a trans.

I just got done putting mine back in the car today, what a PITA !

I also installed a 700R4 in my '81 and went thtough same ordeal.
As already stated by others, you need this adapter bracket. Without it's not going to work correctly and you're risking damaging the transmission if the line pressure is too low i.e TV cable too loose. The 700R4 is very sensitive to this.

Hope this helps
