Has anyone experienced any problem with clearance issues when using a Melling M-77 stock replacement oil pump / stock pickup screen and a big block factory high performance oil pan? Specifically, the baffling in the pan won't allow the pan to fit over the pump. Hate to modify the baffling in a perfect oil pan.
Just now bolted on my NOS L-88 pump (GM part #3964259) and the stock 427 - 435 pan clears perfectly. Not sure what is different about the Melling M-77 pump, but it won't work with the stock pan. Now I have to find a pump that will work with the pan................I'm saving the NOS L-88 pump for a "special" project.
Is the NOS "L-88" pump any different than the 'usual and customary' GM V8 pump? Is it higher flow or higher pressure than the stock unit? If only higher pressure, install a different regulator spring in a stock pump.
