Hey Guys,
My 72 big block has suddenly started pinging on acceleration, I use the best fuel available from the pump but wondering if I should be using an
fuel additive as well?
Sorry if this has been asked before....

If you are running 93 and it pings you might have gotten a bad tank of fuel. as far as a fuel additive they don't work. if after another tank it still pings check timing and you may have to retard it a couple of degrees.
If it's pinging, just check the timing. Timing can shift/drift with age of parts, etc. depending on what type of ignition system you are using. It's easy to check; that way you'll know if it's your adjustment or the gas.
You may check the timing and discover that its set properly and the gas you're running just ain't cutting it anymore. Gas is going to hell.
You have some options, octane booster (Yes, it does work, don't buy garbage) or take a couple degrees of timing out of it. It's going to be cheaper to take some timing out and you probably won't notice much of a difference.
Start with removing the distributor cap and rotor and check if your mechanical advance weights and springs are stuck in the fully advanced position. If they are stuck clean all the components. Then check your dwell angle and initial timing.
