The heater control valve in line between the manifold and
the heater core is not getting any vacuum (the vacuum line
just slips over the stem without any resistance). Putting
vacuum on the valve makes it move. The vacuum hose
back into the firewall will not hold a vacuum.
So, as a temporary fix until I get brave enough to replace
all the vacuum hoses, I thought about putting a manual
shut off in place of the vacuum operated one.
Can this be done? If so, what kind of valve? Is there
one made for automotive use or can I just use a
simple valve purchased from the plumbing section of
a hardware store?
Finally, does anyone know the size of the heater hose
right off hand?
As long as the vacuum shut off works why don't you tap into a vauum line near the carb that has full vacuum all the time so as soon as you start the motor the water will be shutoff?
I just used 1/2 inch ball valves with the right adapters to hose(5/8th and 3/4 inch hoses) purchased at Home Depot. If I remember right less then $20 getting clamps too.
I have vacuum so mine was kinda working but I put a valve on both hoses to insure no hot water in the heater core.
Hope that helps.
