I have a question the Hurst; the top bolt is VERY close to the tranny tunnel and most difficult to wrench, has anyone ever dealt with this and what did you do?
Which top bolt?
For the shifter body to the trans mount or the handle itself?
The shifter body top bolt was a tight fit but I was able to carefully tighten it with a hand wrench-
Once the bolt is finger tight, you don't have to turn it a whole lot more with a wrench to tighten it..
Elm, would you mind posting a photo of your shifter installed in the car? I've been seriously considering buying one of these for my Hurst too and would like to see how it looks and how high it sticks up out of the console.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Sorry that the pictures aren't in any particular order but these are from my original install back in 2008.

Although it does look like you might have some clearance issues between the shifter and the console with the transmission in reverse if it wasn't for your stiffener plate to give it that added clearance.
When I'm ready to buy I think I'll go with the Corvette Central piece.
Thanks again, the photos really paint the picture.
I installed a Hurst Competition Plus on my '71 with the regular stick without the "T". I used the Pit Pack steel bushing kit. Shifter is tight with almost no play. I also heated the stick & bent it back about 3" to locate the shifter better (under the boot - not visible)
The difference in quality is unreal; why in the world Chevrolet did not put the Hurst in the Corvette from the factory is beyond my wildest imagination. Just like the Upper A Arm Stabilizer Bar, the Hurst shifter is a must.

If you try out one of the early C-4's with the 4+3, you'll immediately realize that (for the most part) is exactly what they did. Add a short throw kit and it's practically a Competition Plus...
