Default 1977 tach problems

i just bought a 1977 corvette and the tach does not work, it reads at 1k unless i punch it, then it will rise up to 1500 and stop. any ideas? could it be a ground or the small brown barrel on the intake manifold?

Its estimated that 90% of the time its the tach board that in a 77 requires getting into the dash. Do a search and you'll find lots of discussions and links to videos that offer some excellent instruction for example one of the forum supporters Wilcox.

One way to eliminate the filter is to bypass it... Unplug the filter from the tach wire and then plug the tach wire straight in the distributor. If the problem is still there then you need a board. If the problem is gone you need a filter.
