Background: 17 yr. old borrowed my vette. When he returned it, I could get it to barely move forward, and barely in reverse. I can now shift in all gears with the clutch OUT. But I can't move. More or less, the clutch is permanently disengaged. I heard rumor that sometimes kids will speed shift and get the clutch plate stuck to the flywheel. I'm also told that one can bang on the clutch plate to get it pop back into place.
My Problem: I can't figure out how to get the bellypan guard off of the tranny to see what's up with the clutch. Things such as the clutch pedal arm, oil filter, etc. seem to impede removal of this protective case. However, there is a small area that allows the clutch pedal to travel freely, where a screwdriver could be poked in at the proper angle and break the clutch plate free. Is this a potential solution, or what am I missing in terms of removing the inspection plate by the clutch. Any help from anyone is appreciated.

Is the clutch housing in one or two peices? Does the 76 have a two peice bell housing? On my 78 it is one peice and the transmission must be removed to get to the clutch. How far down do you have to depress the clutch pedal before you feel resistance from the pressure plate? It sounds like you disc might be worn out. How many miles are on the clutch? Roger L. Gibbons

There should be a flat dust cover on the lower front of the bell housing. It's attached with about 6 screws. You can pull it off and take a look, but you may not be able to see enough to tell what's wrong.

If the clutch plate were stuck to the flywheel, you could not Disengage the clutch, and the car would not sit still wtih the engine running. Either the throw out bearing is jammed on the sleeve, (not likely)and not releasing the fingers on the pressure plate, or your disk is toast. (Most Likely). Drop the bell housing, there is no happy ending here. Sorry.

Did you notice any burnt lining smell when you got it back. It is possible that the clutch was in need of adjustment and (I'm not pointing fingers) if the clutch was abused, it is possible that it burnt some lining off. That combined with a weak pressure plate could produce your symptoms. I would try an clutch adjustment but you probably are headed for a clutch job sooon.
