Default Low Fuel Light

Quick question concerning the Low Fuel light.

I have an 81 and the Fuel Gauge works fine... well it stays on Full a little too long, and when it's on Empty, it really has about 5 gallons left - but I can mentally calibrate those readings and adjust my gas station pit stops accordingly.

My question is this... how does the Low Fuel light determine when to light up?

I traced the wiring diagram and it appears that the same Ohms signal the is used to register the amount of fuel with the fuel gauge is also used to light up the low fuel light.

So is the purpose of that little circuit board to simply measure when the Ohms reading of that wire passes below a certain threshold and then light the light?

In effect, it isn't really giving me any extra information that the fuel gauge isn't already giving me - correct? Basically when the fuel gauge hits a certain level, ie some Ohms reading, and that same value via the circuit board is causing the light to come on.

It's not like there is a separate wire coming from the gas tank that I missed that uses a separate sensor to tell the light when the fuel level has gotten below a certain level, correct?

If that's the case, I don't see any major added benefit to take the time, effort, and expense to get that light going if it isn't working already.

Thoughts?

The low fuel light is just an extra visual indication of the gauge reaching a set point.

For those who do not pay attention to their gauges.
