On a 1980, does anyone know if is there a vacum line I can block or reverse, or some other method, to make the heat riser valve wide open all the time?
The baffle plate in the valve is rattling. From the actuator near the valve the rod comes up to a vacum line that goes to the TVS. I can pinch that line with a pair of pliers and the noise stops but I do not know if the baffle is in the open or closed position.
I am trying to avoid doing a R&R on the EFE itself.
If memory serves me correctly, believe the valve is closed with vacuum applied.
That is, the engine should have vacuum in this line when engine is cold, but no vacuum when engine is fully up to operating temperature. If I'm remembering correctly, then all you have to do, is remove the hose from the valve, cap off the valve fitting and plug / remove the vacuum hose.
If you disconnect the line, plug it with a bolt or plug the valve will stay in to open position. It only closes for a short period when vacume is attached to it.
Just disconnect/plug the hose that runs down to the heat-riser. I removed mine entirely when I switched to headers. When disconnected, EFE valve is in 'open' position. Under WOT (and connected) or once engine warms up, it is also supposed to be open (when operating properly).
I will have to pass on your offer as the one I ordered has already shipped. Blocked off the vacum line and all is quiet again. I really think they over engineered a method to get the engine warm faster.
Thanks to all for your help.
