Need some help here ...looking at buying this 71 vert project, it has some rust around the windshield frame.
Should I run... or is this something that can be repaired? if it can be fixed how much am I looking at $$ wise as this is above my pay grade.
If you have that extent of rust damage on the upper windshield post I would be very concerned about what is hidden. Pull lower interior kick panels and look at lower hinge pillar (#2 body mount area). Also pull right interior dash panel (with pouch) and look at lower windshield area. Even if you check these areas there is still the possabilty of hidden rust in areas you just can't see.
Hi JB,
That looks like serious rust. So many times it just gets worse as the car comes apart. It's likely that the water that caused that rust was running down hill and rusting presently hidden parts too.
Have you looked at the rest of the birdcage?; I'd want to see the condition of the hinge pillars....(in the kick panel areas), and also the lock pillars....(through the access plate in the front of the rear wheel wells).
Often/Generally, rusty birdcage cars are best to stay away from unless you've made some financial or emotional commitment to it.
If this car doesn't mean something to you look for another. In my mind you really can't pay too LITTLE for a rusty car.
I'm saying this ... and I LOVE 71 cars!
Regards,
Alan
Hi SS, I didn't mean to be an echo... I was slow typing!
I alreday have an 80 L48 that I'm working on ....just didn't want to pass up a diamond in the ruff, this forum is great !! you guys probably just saved my 20yr marriage
It depends on what your skill levels are? Are you comfortable with a complete body off and birdcage replacement? If you or your wallet aren't up to the task, I'd say run and run quickly.
In the photo above, looks like water sitting in the footwells, I'd be scared to see what's behind the kick panels where the 2nd body bolt is. The frame and birdcage are toast and in need of replacement. The frame maybe not such a big $ deal, but the birdcage I've read is where the $ is at.
personaly, id be looking at it as a parts car.if there is anything of benefit.i have always found what you can't see is worse than what you can
I agree with this comment - a car that rusty may be best served donating its parts to other, more solid cars. Sad to see a chrome bumper convertible bite the dust, but it seems like that has already happened with this one. And for nearly $6k that's a pricey parts car or project either way.

It is sad. But that car is headed to Corvette Heaven, minus stripped off body parts. You have to wonder why the seller believes it is worth $5,900??
I need it like I need a hole in the head, but I might make an offer on, if I had the chance. I guess I need to get rid of these rose colored glasses.
Another frame maybe and a bunch of seat time at the welder.
