Default 1982 Crossfire Speed Sensor Swap

From what little I can find/understand the 1982 (with crossfire) has a vehicle speed sensor mounted on the back of the stock speedometer. This evidently sends a signal through a little yellow box to the fuel injection ECM.

I am swapping out the speedometer with a digital. Anyone have any idea about what I need to do to supplant or replace this sensor?

Yes, get the 84 700R4 speed sensor adapter. It installs in place of the mechanical 82 one and can be wired to the ECM. Simple as that :)

On what signal are you running the digital speedo? You could use the same sender (out of the 84)

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the info!!! :D
I've got the Nordskog speedometer and their sender #S9013. It is described further below.

Do you think the Nordskog will work if wired to the ECM? If so any idea on what wires go where. If I use the 84 700R4 do I need to feed its signal through the yellow box to the ECM or direct?

Universal, speedometer sending unit for Nordskog digital gauges

This Nordskog sending unit accurately sends information back to your high tech series digital speedometer gauge. It's reliable, easy to install, a perfect fit, and required for use with any Nordskog universal digital speedometer gauge .

Is the Norskog speedo driven digitally or does it use the stock cable?

If it uses the cable you can't use the 84 700R4 sender (it goes into the tranny tailshaft) and you'll have to get a seperate able driven VSS (turbocity & painless have them I think)

If the speedo is completely digital you can use the 84 pulse sender. Just hook it up to the ECM and tap into the wire that sends the pulses for the speedo (I guess there's some sort of pulse calibration on the speedo)

The yellow box on the 82 is the actual VSS, it sends a signal to the ECM. The other side has a wire w/ 2 "leds" (one opticalsensor one actual led) and the yellow box converts the signal for the ECM.

The gauge is digitally driven. The layout I have right now is the cable runs from the trans up to the cruise control unit. On the cruise control outlet drive I installed a Nordskog VSS (instead of the old speedo cable). It has two wires on it (tan and black). The tan goes to the speedo gauge and black to ground. I looked at the Painless unit (did not find the T-City) and it appears to have only two wires too.

Out of the back of the original speedo and through the yellow box I have three wires. Any idea what the extra wire does and which wire goes where?

I could probably attach the 84 700R4 to the cruise control instead of the Nordskog. Does it have three wires? I did call Nordskog and they couldn't tell me a thing. The Nordskog speedo instructions say you can use other VSS with the gauge which leads me to believe there must be some commonality between them.

An 700R4 is the trans, I mean the700R4 pulse sender. You need the 82 one since the nordskog gauges take their signal from a mech (cable) driven VSS.

So, the only problem left is to hook up the VSS signal to the ECM. That's relativly easy :) The stock VSS has a brown wiregoing to the ECM (where the little "flat" cable from the yellow box plugs into the normal harness)

That one is the VSS signal so just hook it up to that.

Oops! I meant to say 84 700R4 speed sensor. Its hard enough to get your fingers and a sender in that little area let alone another trans.

Oh the brown wire (of the three)!! That's just what I needed. It would have taken me at least six tries to figure that one out :jester

Thanks for all the good info.

Default What about a regular '82??

I have an '82 Vette...and I've been chasing this cruise control gremlin for 5 years now. I've replace just about everything within the system, then I find out that the Vehicle Speed Sensor (GM part# 1201546??) could be the culprit. I am keeping the car to original as possible, so, what wiring will I need to be concerned with? Where/what on the tranny will require my attention? What/where on the affected ECM??What suitable sub part can be pruchased to get me original factory type results?? Thanx ahead!!
