Not on the Vette, fortunately, but on the "opposite" of a Corvette: a Chevrolet Corsa 1.0L, the Brazilian version of the German Opel Corsa, or the British Vauxhall (sp?). I was driving on the highway at about 70mph when the car simply stopped going (not that it was really going before... :D ). I downshifted; nothing! Pulled over and tried to restart the car a couple of times, and I'm afraid that may have been a big mistake....
We rode about 100 miles on a flatbed, left the car at the mechanic, and just got home. What a long trip...
How serious can be the damage, guys? I'm a little worried; this is my mom's only car, and $$$ to fix the car may be a problem.
Thanks,
-Pedro
P.S. We were just coming from my hometown, where the main Brazilian classic car show was being held. It was fantastic. Will probably post about that once I get some pics developed.
First thing we need to find out is if that is an "interference design" engine. That means that if the valves are open at the wrong time, the piston will hit the valves. That's bad. If it isn't an interference engine, then you're in fine shape and just need to replace the timing belt/chain.
When you tried to start it, did it go WHACKITY WHACKITY WHACK? (That's the sound of the pistons hitting the valves) or was it pretty quiet & uneventful?
Had a timing chain go once. Paid a shop $400 to change it, no tools or place to work at the time. Got it back and it started squeeling about week later. Took it back and the guys says 'Probably got a blockage in the oil pump and no oil to the bearings.' I said 'Well since you seem to know what it is why did you not check to make sure all the nylon got out of the oil pan?' He just shrugged his shoulders. Thanks for nothing!
Thanks a lot! It's a 4 cylinder engine. When I tried to start it, it made a strange sound, but not too loud. Sounded more like the chain hitting something than pistons hitting valves.
The good news is, we just talked to the mechanic and he said that most likely nothing serious happened, and it will be just a matter of replacing the chain.
Quick question: do the Corvette engines have an interference design?
Fevre,
400 bux, just to have more problems? That sux! :mad

Classic car show in Brazil?? I spent a total more than 6 months in Brazil and never saw a classic car there... (well - lots of old cars but no classics  )
I'm not sure if all Vette engines have interference fit, but my one does.
It's a 427 big block 11.5 compr and when the pistons are on top dead center, the valves do hit the piston.
So, any broken or slipped chain = big $ fix.
May be the low compressed V8 might pass by.
It sounds strange that only 2 valves got bent. I have a 2 Liter Opel Manta B engine that hit and all 4 intake valves got damaged.
Good luck. Gunther
Olivier: the classic cars here usually belong to collectors, and aren't seen on the street. That's what makes an event like that so cool. My hometown, the small town of Araxá, in Minas Gerais, was totally transformed during those days, with all those cool old cars everywhere. :) BTW, the Brazilian automotive industry started only in the 60's, so before that all the cars used came from Europe and USA. There were some really gorgeous and rare cars in the show. Not too many Corvettes, but there was at least one beautiful representative of each of the "classic" generations.
Onde você esteve aqui no Brasil?
Gunther: thanks for your response. I hope my Vette engine doesn't have an interference design. If it does, then I'll soon be checking/replacing the timing chain.
Pedro. Nope. Small block chevy's are NOT interference engines. Rest a little easier. (A heavily modded engine might be though. High lift + high dome pistons could be a problem)

Re: [OT] Broken timing chain... (ddecart)
I had that happin with a 91 Nissan piskup the chane tencioner came off and the bolt went between the crank gear and chain! it bent sevral valves damaged the guides, and cam, crank gear.cost $800 for complete head $200 for other parts.
the truck was just out of warenty.
Dave: Thanks! It's good to know that this kind of problem can't happen with the Vette.
Wightnite: that's a lot of damage to the pocket! I still don't know how bad is our damage; the mechanic will take the head to a machine shop, and then they will let us know. Hope it isn't that bad...
Onde voçê esteve aqui no Brasil?
Eu so falo portugues em casa)

Unfortunately I DID have a timing chain/gear go in my Vette a few months ago. Was driving home from work, everything stopped about 1 mile from the bridge I need to go over to get home. My first thought was that the fuel pump had died, no such luck although I was half right, without the gear the pump, she no work!
Anyway, after $3kAus it goes again. Heads removed, valves replaced, harmonic balancer replaced, timing gear, chain etc. Now I literally have a reconditioned motor, the rings, pistons etc all passed muster thank goodness.
Only problem now is that I have dead rear wheel bearing assembly, anyone got one they dont want....... Thats about $1000Aus to get replaced.. :mad
OzVette: That really sucks! :( Did you have a modified engine, or aftermarket heads?

Minha namorada sempre fala sobre o Acaraje. Eu nunca comi.
