Default 1971 BB Intake Options

Any suggestions for an intake that will fit under the stock hood of a 1971 LS5 would be appreciated. This is an oval port head engine. I believe the LS6 had the GM low rise aluminum intake but that was for the square port heads. Not sure if you can even buy the original from Chevy. Thanks in advance for the help.

Default A few options

Hans,

You have a few options:

- Edelbrock, Torker II is may or may not be the best for your engine
- Old Chevy Alum, L 36, - a little gain, restrictive, less weight
- Find an old Holley Street Dominator on ebay - flows better than stock and fits under the hood.
- Also a Team G intake might fit, I took the measurements once and it seemed like it would work.

I had heard negative comments on the Torker II and found an old Holley on Fleabay. I actually wanted to use an Alum L 36 intake that I had but it was crap. The STreet Dominator fits with a drop down air cleaner and base. It is tight, very tight be careful

Oh, i am running a 489 with nearly 500 hp, so the system works. Got the old Holley for something like $89! Good value

If you can find an LS6 intake, It will work fine. I don't think they're considered rare, try e-bay. I think the part# is 3963569. The ones I've seen for sale at swap meets are not priced any higher than any other intake. It is a rectangle port intake, so you need to use the rectangle port gasket.

I wanted a LS6 manifold for my 1972 and afer some googeling i foun that is was better spending my money on a brand new product rather the by a second hand 40 year old.

I bought mine here: http://thepartsplaceinc.com/newproducts.asp?curpage=7

This company is casting up new manifolds with the correct numbers etc.

And they fit under a stock BB hood.

Bear in mind that this intake are for the square shaped bigport heads.

How do you like the way it runs with the Torker II? I don't know it I can do worse than what I have now, 45 lbs of stock steel best suited for a boat anchor. Thanks

The Torker II gets a lot of abuse..but franky..if the hood isn't changed you don't have many options. I've seen some Mopar testing where the Torker II did surprisingly well against other tricker stuff. It's a small plenum single plane with short runners. It will outflow the stocker by a good amount...but not be as good as one with more plenum and runner length..but again...you're stuck.

The flat LS-6 intake can work too. Years ago Super Stocker guys said they were down 20 HP with it as compared to the old 427/425 style one..but they did OK. There's been some awful fast cars that were using that intake..so if I had it...I'd use it too.

I totally agree with you Jim.

The LS6 manifold is not to be compared or mixed with "high performance" manifolds..

Its just a nice looking stock aluminum intake that fits under the stock BB hood.

If one is aming for 500-600 hp's the LS6 manifold is not the way to go.

I used an oval port Torker on my L36 390hp 427 with a 750 DP - whilst it didn't acually seem to make things any quicker (and the engine was rather 'tired') it certainly seemed to give a mid range boost between 2 and 3 thousand rpm and make things a little more lively!

One might get away with such an install without going to the trouble, but IMHO epoxy is a relatively easy way to achieve a proper match between rectangle port intakes and oval port heads...

If the task seems too difficult, any decent shop ought to be able to do it for a nominal fee.

IIRC Moroso still carries the right type for this. In any event, I'd buy only an epoxy meant for such usage, and only from an automotive resource, rather than taking a chance on what you might find down at the corner hardware store.

Thanks Skunkworks - plan sourcing 8 stack injection manifold and 'filling' rect ports to match oval heads.

FWIW, I've still got a Crower IR setup (as seen in the Chevy Power book BB section) that needs a good home.

Have pump and other bits too, including custom surge tank fabbed up by Moon and NIB set of extra stacks. Old school mechanical, but can be converted to EFI.
