Hi 71LS5:
I'm your neighbor Silvr77 in Wildwood.
#1 The vaccum line from the distributor should go to a designated vac advance source on the carb.
#2 Depending on which cam you have, vacuum will vary. I think the ideal range to run all accessories is around 12-18. (if I remember correctly)
#3 I have a wirering diagram for a 77. If it's the same for a 71, I can email it to you, or drop by with that monster of yours... I'd love to see it!! Let me know what you want via email.
Eddie
This link will take you to a generic diagram from Zip corvette. I wonder if this is one of the Dr. rebuild diagrams?? I used this diagram to help trouble shoot my vacuum system.
1. I too have an LS5 ( '72 ). The vacumm advance line goes from the front upper right of the carb ( ported ) to a solinoid then to the vacumm advance. I will take a pic if you need one.
2. Minimum vacuum ??? My car - fairly stock - runs 19 in. mg. You can have less depending on health of motor and cam. I'm not sure if there is a lower limit, but I'd guess 10 - 12 in. mg. would be about the minumum.
3. You have a vacuum leak. I just got all the tools and a troubleshoting guide because I'm going through mine now. It is actually pretty straight forward, but you gotta understand what all the pieces do and be very methododical. Perhap we could tag team yours and mine. 2 heads are better than one.
4. I have the service manual for my '72. I'd bet they are the same
Hey the guys thanks for the info! Well Sray454/silver77 lets get together for a few beers and see eachothers projects! We can meet at my place and I can invite my neibor as he has a C3 and doing a 383 rebuild right next door. Even though most of my work is allmost complete these old cars allways need something. and with respect to the vacuum system I think two heads would be better than one as well. So with that maybe we can get stuff done while we shoot the shxt huh? We are all very close and now have a place. I live off Atkinson Rd in the town homes across from the new Cherry Creek. What do you guys think?
One area to look at when chasing a vacuum leak is the accessories. I had a line unplugged under my center consule. After plugging it I gained a pound or two of vac and I am sure it helped in allowing me to tune my car.
I think i had about 7 diffrent vacuum leaks when i bought the car.One of the biggest leaks were in the relays to the headlights..I built my own vacuum pump out of a old bicycle pump and connected a good vacuum meter. Then it was just pump and listen where it hissed..Now i got a completely tight system...As a fellow forum member said ,its all pretty straight forward if you take your time.. :smash: :smash:
