Default side yoke play

How much/or how little - should the side yokes on the differential move in and out? Driver's side moves about 1/16 - the passenger side moves in/out about 1/8-3/16 (ish)

The least the better,

over around 1/8" or so you need to start thinking about repairs,

there are plenty of C3's out there with more play than yours still on the road,

the end of the stub shaft wears until the retaining clip falls off in the diff and that could possibly do some damage. If the stub shafts mushroom to severely than it will be a trying job to get them out.

I had around a 1/8 play when car is off the ground and I pull/push the wheel at 12 and 6.

Now that the wheels and halfshafts are off, I cant pull the side yoke at all by hand.....but Im guessing thats just because I dont have enough leverage. Nevertheless I am getting the diff rebuilt.

Ninety nine percent of the time the side yokes are inwards loaded, and that is why they wear against the center spider gear shaft. With the half-shafts removed, you can push and pull the side yokes in and out - this is the free play we've been discussing.

If the car is off the ground with tires, halfshafts and all, pushing and pulling on the tire at 6 and 12 o'clock will have magnified movement because of the leverage... Still, the side YOKE should not move in and out any farther than we've been discussing (it IS harder to measure this way!)

So in my case....

No wheels and no halfshafts, in/out movement by hand is around 1/16th

With wheel on, pushing/pulling on 12 and 6, it moves out of the diff around 1/8th to 2/8ths. - Would you then conclude that I should look into it?

The side yokes are limited in their outward movement by the circular clips internal to the diff. If you can pull them out "2/8" inch but only 1/16" with the half shafts disconnected, something is amiss. I'd fix it before anything worse happens.

Pull the diff, remove the back cover and look for wear at the end of the side yokes - they're probably very worn. Inspect, and rebuild as necessary.

got enought stuff out of the way now to measure - and the yokes are good. While I was at it - determined that one of the trailing arm bushings - (that I installed about a thousand miles ago) is bad. I really think I installed it incorrectly (didn't use the tool) so it's my own darn fault . Ordered a replacement already and it showed up at the front door yesterday.
