Default Is this right??? BB Manifold Question--

Getting ready to put the manifold back on (ain't it pretty?), and I noticed that the upper oil passage in the middle of the picture below is only covered by gasket material, not by the manifold. Can that be right? What the heck keeps it from leaking? I realize I'm probably demonstrating massive ignorance here, but that just don't seem right to me.

I've had my manifold on and off a few times, the manifold looks like yours......my heads don't have that oil port, it sure doesn't look like that.....when the manifold bolts up.

Oh, crap. That's right where the damned thing was leaking, too. Has this thing got the wrong heads on it? Here's a pic without the manifold. Anybody?

I can show you a picture of my manifold / heads. Do you have an email address I can use, I don't know how to post pictures here yet.

What you should be looking at is your heat crossover passage, no oil circulates through the intake. Are your head casting numbers correct? My heat crossover looked nothing like that and was only the size of the heat crossover port on the intake manifold (I'm running a 68 L-36 intake).

Pat, I think he is talking about that gaping hole between the intake manifold and the valve cover in the top pic (dont look at the intake manifold itself)

JB, While we are checking, what is the # on the intake? MJ

JB,

No that does not look right. But, maybe someone that has set and intake on BB heads without the gasket can tell. The heads appear to be standard BB large oval port heads. Post the head numbers (under the valve cover) and the manifold number (stamped on top 6 digits) and we can tell. Is this the origional intake?

Incidentally, your photo of the heads looks familiar. I think mine could actually be the same. That top port reduces heat from coupling from the exhaust crossover to the head. It is probably simply covered by the gasket. I think the top port above the round exhaust crossover port is not connected into the oil space anywhere and probably should not leak.
Perhaps you could have a closer look.

I don't think the heads or the manifold are wrong.

I have emailed a photo of mine.

The top cavity does nothing. It is covered by the gasket and is a good place for liquids to find there way into. That is why you thought it was an oil passage.

That's what I wanted to hear! Thanks, guys. Joe, thanks for sending the pic of your manifold. The top and bottom cavities are both oily, which is what made me think they were both oil passages, but then my gaskets were leaking, which is why I pulled the manifold in the first place.

The number on the intake, BTW, is 8947801 (hmmm, that's seven #s, not 6?). I'd pull the valve covers and get the head #s, but I'm just too darned tired. Tomorrow.

I gotta chill out. I'm taking this stuff way too seriously! I never got panicky about my '78 like this. I wonder why that is? :D

Learn something new about the 'Vette every day. Just looking at a picture of my L36 and you can see the extra gasket material in that same area.

Hope it helps you chill some! :D

How true. Went out and felt the extra material and the indentation in the head. Sure makes you think and look hard when you put the intake on without a gasket and wow a hole.
