Almost ready to pull the motor and 4spd trans out of my 79. Pulled the center console to remove the shift lever, expecting to see 2 bolts. I find a pin with a cotter pin going front to back ( rusted solid) and a bolt going side to side through what looks like all the shift rods. I have the pin soaking right now and will continue tomorrow, am I correct in that that pin and the bolt have to come out?
Thanks
The pin can stay, but the bolt will have to come out. Unhook all the shift rods, remove that bolt and the ones from the bottom, (the lower boot must already be off), and lift the shifter out from the top.
I had read some other posts where they said removing the shift rods was not neccessary and had hoped that was true.
Is there a preferred gear the trans should be in before I remove the shift rods to make it easy to hook them back up when the trans goes back in?
Hi,
I believe I'd unbolt the shifter from it's bracket; then unbolt the bracket and take it out from underneath the tunnel.
Then I'd take the clips off the shifter rods at the transmission levers and pull the shifter out with the rods still attached (and adjusted!).
Regards,
Alan
