After a trip this weekend my gas gauge started acting up. The gauge jumps around after filling up the car. It jumps from full to about a half and back. Is this a general indication of a defective gauge?
My understanding is that with a problem like this the culprit is rarely the gauge itself. It is usually a defective ground at the sender or in the instrument cluster, or the sending unit in the tank has left the building.

Or the ohms wire is loose at the sender.. Check all of this..
A quick way to test the dash unit.. (with the key on) is to pull the ohms wire and see if it pegs full.. Then ground this same wire and the tank should move to empty. If it pass's this test the dash unit is working.
Mine goes past full with no ohm wire, and empty when this is grounded.
But when i put it back on the sender unit, it shows just under full.
But the tank only has about 3-4 inch of gas when i put a dip stick in the tank, im guessing it should be around half full....
