Default 9 Leaf Spring still Has Shipping Band

Purchased a 76 Vett a year ago and reading some tech post, I've ran across some that mentioned removing the 'shipping band' on this spring. I'm reworking the rear and am waiting on parts, so I have it apart now. My spring has these bands, about 8 to 10 inches from the ends, should they be removed and if so, do I reinstall the spring then remove the bands or remove the bands before I put the spring back on? I've been driving this car for over a year with them and have had no problem.

Hi 76,
You can safely remove the shipping bands. They really are there just to help keep the stack parallel.
A lot of springs are seen in pictures with the bands still in place. I'd think the bands have some effect on the the spring's function since they change how the individual leafs react to each other.
Regards,
Alan

Hello 76V. I refinished a reproduction (Eaton/Detroit spring) and when I disassembled it to paint each leaf, I removed the shipping bands at that time. I did not replace them. I've driven the car 2,000 miles or so since with no shifting of any leaves. Hope this helps.

remove and throw them away before installing the spring. I take a large slot screw driver put the edge on the band and tap the end of the screw driver with the hammer to cut the band. its an old tin knockers trick.
