With the situation of not pulling and storing the old engine you'll want to "freshen" up the old one. A cam and heads or porting/polishing your present ones will give you more flexibility on the torque your seeking. Stroking it will give you more torque and will be "invisible" from the outside. IMHO I'd stroke the present motor and have present heads ported/polished, no parts to store, a rise in both torque and HP and a stock look under the hood. If upon resale somone was disinterested because of the stroked motor it can be undone if you keep the old crank/rod/piston. Good Luck
Scott

I love those base engine 350s. They respond well to basic hotrodding.

I mean no disrespect with my following statement; you've got a numbers matching base engine Vette, not an LT1 or big block. I, repeat, I wouldn't be as concerned about matching numbers on a 350/300 as I would be on an LT1. With that said, here's my suggestion:

Rebuild the shortblock with quality but not exotic parts. Pay the extra for professional balancing & maybe even blueprinting. As part of the rebuild, install a new hi-perf cam to match your chosen compression ratio. Because you probably don't want a high reving race engine, you can keep the compression ratio within a very practical range. FYI, the base 350 cam is THE limiting factor in your current setup, bow-wow.

Next, instead of rebuilding your decent heads, buy a set of new-tech high performance heads. Aluminum would be a great choice if you can afford it. Factor your head material choice in your final compression ratio decisions. Store the original heads.

How's that sound?

Thank you all for your very decent responses, I have some food for thought now.

Nunus79- No disrespect taken- I agree with you.
