On my way home tonight the car stuck into i think two gears at a stoplight! Would not move, when letting off clutch engine would slow (and die if let to). I wiggled the stick like hell, restarted the car and got first gear but nothing else. Had to limp home. I had this happen once before, and I think I can free it up by reaching under and pulling on the shift rods when it cools down, am I right??? But why does this happen/what do I need to do to fix this?
You need to replace your shifter linkage. It may just be that the bushings are very worn. If the shifter is original, you might as well just go for new.
It sounds like your linkage is out of adjustment, either from a rod that is bent or excessive wear in the receiving holes (where the rods attach). I used to have to jump out of my old 442 and reach under the car to jiggle the linkage when I would get jammed every so often. Your post brought back some terrible memories!!! I would guess that new linkage would be the answer here, if it doesn't turn out to be anything with the transmission. When it happened before did you fix it by pulling on the shift rods as you describe? Sounds like old linkage. My .02 :)
Adjustment will probably cure you without buying parts unless it's very worn. The Haynes manual can walk you thru the adjustment. I 'm replacing the shift levers at the trans. because they are wallowed out to the point that adjustment doesn't cut it- I got stuck in reverse and first and fried my clutch plate a while back. :smash:
To keep this from happening, make sure transmission goes into neutral after reverse BEFORE shifting into any forward gear. Mine used to get hung up like that and I am more careful now before quick shifting.... :yesnod:
Thanks for the responses...UPDATE...I was able to get it unstuck by moving one of the rods all the way foward...problem is that probably unlike your 442 the exhaust runs about 2 inchs from the linkage and I dont think I could pull that off without messing myself up badly. I will have to replace the linkage I am guessing.
Another question, I dont think this is directly related, but I have had a very slow (oil?) leak around the tranny the whole time I have had the car. We are talking about a quarter size/week on the ground. I noticed recently some more viscous stuff in the same area, like grease, but really grimey. Any ideas what this is???
The oild leak is probably unrelated... But I would check you levels while you are up in there.
I hope the linkage adjustment solved your problem because it sounds alot like what happened to my old tranny when I busted up one of the shift hubs. If it happens again... even after a linkage adjustment, you might have to open her up. (Just an FYI...I hate bringing bad news!!!) Let me know if your problem comes back, and I'll try to walk you through it...
