Default A/C questions

i have asked some of this before but want to clarify. my 79 has<13k miles, the system over time apparently bled down. i borrowed a friends vacuum pump and vacuumed it out for over an hour. it held with no leak overnight. i ve been told to at least replace the orifice tube and add ester oil.i was told by someone else to also replace the drier, someone else said don't mess with the drier just yet in case something goes wrong. also I'm reasonably sure where the orifice tube is located but has anyone got a picture? any other tips are welcome. also i am going with r12

for the A/C stuff i take it to the A/C guy. they still know how to work on them. if yours has gone south they can rebuild it for you. if that car has only 13 thousand miles i would have it rebuilt and keep it all the same...

AC systems naturally bleed down over time, the freon molecules can leak right through the walls of even good hoses. It would be exceptional for it to have charge in it after 30 years. Although it's not required, it's a good idea to replace the drier especially since the system is now empty and while you're there, the orifice tube also. Most of the o-ring seals for the hose connections are easy to get to so no harm in replacing them too.

Any automotive AC shop can leak test and charge your system. R12 is still available
