Default Rust? in the fuel

My '71 has been sitting garaged for 12+ months. Here is a picture of a shot of fuel right before it hits the carb (in a white plastic cup):

I'm assuming that's rust, but not even sure about that. I had Stabil in the tank, but apparently not enough.

Once I get the tank emptied, what steps do I need to take to clean it? Or do I just need to ask Santa for a new tank for Christmas? How do I flush the fuel system to get any remnants out?

There is a good chance it is rust. 40+ years can work on a tank no matter what you put in the fuel the past year or so. Moisture buildup, especially from storage with the tank not full, could have happened years ago. The tank can be cleaned and coated, but for all the trouble, a new tank is not very expensive. You can get a Chinese version for less than $200 and a Canadian version is not much more. I have an old Jeep that I coated the tank years ago and have not had a problem. My Corvette got a new tank.

Hi SS,
Have you looked into the tank to see what it looks like in there? Could the junk be gas line rust?
If needed, I agree with 74M that a new tank may be the right way to go.
Quanta sells very nice reproductions that are made in Canada.
$229

Alan

Stabil will not prevent a tank from rusting.
