I have a 1979 Corvette that all of the front and rear suspension and steering has been rebuilt with Vette Brakes parts. It rides and feels really solid with the exception at highway speeds when going in to a curve it feels really lose in the rear. I also noticed that when in a curve if I accelerate, and then let off the gas it steers the car from the rear. When looking for the problem I noticed that with the rear jacked up if I place a bar under the rear wheel and lift up the wheel moved in and out about 1/4 tp 1/2 of an inch. When looking at everything under the car the half shaft yoke moves in and out of the differential about 1/8 of an inch.
Could this cause the handling problem?
How much play is acceptable here?
What wares on this that causes this?
I believe mine was set up with about .015 play on the stub axels. Worn posi. clutches also cause some of the play in the stub axels. Watch the strut rods for worn bushings when you do the flex at 6 and 12 o'clock. mike...
MDS Thank you for the response, The strut rods look good and do have new bushings. I can not get any movement from them. So do you think that the handling problem is from the play in the stub axles?
i just went all through this and i set the wheel alignment myself with home made tools.make sure the car is tracking properly and the rear is not toe'd out.it will be hard to control.the play you have is about what i have and my issue was more with the proper alignment than the yoke play.
