Absolutley, there will be a differance. Maybe a set of hooker or headman collector extentions will get you from the collector to the crossmember. They have nice bends that might get you close. I will be using them in the 3" version, but I do not have the original crossmember.
No worries, thanks. I've been looking for a 2.5" header back system and thought maybe I missed one which wouldn't be hard with all the aftermarket sites out there. I did see some that are OE manifold back but they are 2.25" to 2.5", which I could have cut and welded onto the collector flange but again they are 2.25" upstream then 2.5" downstream. Where it makes the change I don't know.
Having said that, I did see a 2.5" all the way back for (OE manifold back), for BB, would there be any difference with a SB?

Good Luck
I'm close to pulling the trigger on the Pypes mandrel X pipe system- free shipping & handling from Summit ends tomorrow, which would save $30-40. I don't know how the alignment for smallblock vs. bigblock headers differs, but they almost certainly will require some fab work to mate up. Pypes makes a collector/reducer piece, sold in pairs, that will help- but there will still be a need for a gentle bend between the 2 sections to mate them. I'm getting the system w/o mufflers since I love the ones I have. That will require some extra work at the back end too. Luckily I have a friend who will do the work for a reasonable rate. Hit me up if you want more details- I've talked to Pypes recently and have all the info you'd want.
I just ordered the 2.5" pypes with racepro from Summit for my 350 L46 with long tubes. For the price, mendrel bend, SS, I couldnt pass on the price even if it will need minor adjustments. I probably wont get to hear it until Spring but Im pretty sure Ill be test fitting them within the next month. I also got new '70 SS exhaust tips which I plan on enlarging the hole from 2.25 to 2.5.
I have a '71 convertible. My 14 year old son and I are building a new 355 for it. After some grinding, the bare block is ready to go to the machine shop. The stock L48 has stock exhaust manifolds and exhaust plus an H pipe and Magnaflow mufflers. The new engine will make around 400 hp with AFR 195 heads, a roller cam, 10.2:1 compression. I am looking for recommendations for headers and exhaust including the mufflers. Performance is a priority, but I don't want to go deaf on our annual 800 mile drive from Seattle to Napa.

Looks great! Cant wait to put mine in. How do you like the Pypes system? Did you have a hard time making adjustments to reach and align with the headers and the mufflers/spare tire tub? I read in multiple threads that the X-pipe does not align with the headers very well.
Let us know how the install goes, what mufflers are those?
Decided to go with the RacePros. After reading a lot of reviews, people complained about the StreetPros as being too loud and would drone. Violators definitely too loud for me. RacePros are ranked as Pype's quietest muffler, other users have reported no drone, deeper tone, decent at idle and as loud as you want at wot. Also very good CFM.
The tips you see in the picture are new SS tips I bought from one of the vendors. I will most likely but the extension, enlarge the hole to 2.5" and weld in a 2.5" extension to match the mufflers.
thanks rafalc. looking at the link the setup seems to fit that 69 real well. Can you just get the pipe setup, I like Magnaflow mufflers for their CFM flow rate and sound. I had a Magnaflow dual in dual out on my 05 Hemi Ram and got lot's of compliments on the sound, of course that 69 in the video sounds great too

Yes, you can get the system from Summit with no mufflers for $85 less. The 69 in the video has the StreetPros - too loud and raspy for my taste, I went with the RacePros.
One thing to remember - their systems do not come with the front pipe leading to the manifolds. If you have headers you will need a decent length reducers to reach the "S" pipe coming out the X.

Yes I had to bend the "S" pipes a wee bit (outward) to get the collectors to fit.

Magnaflow makes a full mandrel SS system for C3 Vettes too, so since you like their sound you may want to check it out. I think the front section is 2.25" and then it becomes 2.5" from around the crossmember back. Between that and the fact that they won't sell it w/o their own mufflers, I bought the Pypes system instead. FYI, the Magnaflow system is a good bit more expensive but it looks very nice.

Pypes make a very nice collector/reducer that's under $60 a pair. I already got that from Summit and it's a very well made, polished piece. That will help bridge the area between the headers and the X pipe section at the crossmember but you'll almost certainly need somebody to also add a short curved piece to connect those two sections. I'll be receiving the rest of the Pypes exhaust kit later this week but it probably won't be installed until after the new year. I can post pics of the install if anybody is interested.
