Default Exhaust recommendations?

I have a '71 convertible. My 14 year old son and I are building a new 355 for it. After some grinding, the bare block is ready to go to the machine shop. The stock L48 has stock exhaust manifolds and exhaust plus an H pipe and Magnaflow mufflers. The new engine will make around 400 hp with AFR 195 heads, a roller cam, 10.2:1 compression. I am looking for recommendations for headers and exhaust including the mufflers. Performance is a priority, but I don't want to go deaf on our annual 800 mile drive from Seattle to Napa.

Hooker Super Comp headers. Long tube headers and they fit! I would use the exhaust system you have.

Go for full length ones and look for ball/socket collectors. Eliminates the 3 bolt flanges that hang too low and gaskets that are prone to leaking.

1-5/8" is probably good for you..but 1-3/4" won't hurt a thing and give you room for growth and more Hp later on.

For what your describing as important to you. Hedman has what they call an elite header it has thicker then normal head flanges and tubing, ball flanges and thermal coating 68308 should fit your car $325.00 at www.summitracing.com. The elite header uses 3/8 head flange and 14 gauge tubing where most average headers use thinner 5/16 head flange and 16 gauge tubing. They use 1 5/8 primary tubes big enough for 400 hp.

Went with Hedman too. The fit was excellent, no modifications.

Click on 109Y. Man, I want a set of these headers so bad, I'd be willing to punch a cute, adorable dolphin right in the face for a set!

Those are sweeeeeeet headers! If I'd known about those when I bought mine, I would probably have the Stan's instead. How much do they want for them? There aren't any prices on the website.

Ummmm, actually, there is no price listed because they have a big seawater tank with a dolphin in it, and what you do is, you walk in, punch the dolphin in the face as hard as you can, and if they think you punched it hard enough, they give you a set of headers.

I'm sorry! Really! I have a really weird sense of humor, plus I've had a couple of martinis, and I think my Mom dropped me a couple of times when I was a baby, so cut me some slack, OK?

Seriously though, I am not sure why there is no price listed, the last time I saw a price for the Stan's corvette headers, I think they were 585 bucks. Not too bad compared to some other headers I have seen out there. I want to say that was well over a year ago. (yes, I have been drooling over these things for awhile now.) I think you can give them a call, and they'll quote you a price.

A man can dream, can't he? Yes..... a man can dream........

Hooker Super Comp here as well. I do wish I had the ball-socket collector setup, maybe I will cut and weld some on.

I'm going 3" all the way out back, 2.5" system will work fine for your set up. Several companys offer a "header - back" system

enjoy the build!

I've been looking for a "header - back" 2.5" system with no success, do you have any links? Thanks

I just got these. Had to exchange for a new unit as the first one had some crappy welds and they were a little banged up, scratches in the coating. These def feel strong, the thick flange and thicker gauge than others feels good.

I test fit them and had to remove the starter. 1" bolts will bottom out so I cut 1/4 off the ends.

Spark plugs boots are VERY close....not sure yet if too close. We'll find out soon.

I'll most likely go with the CC 2.5" pipes and havent decided on magnaflow/flowmaster yet.

Sidepipes.

With reverse-flow mufflers; you will probably complain it's too quiet. That said, the inserts are removable for those days you want to go deaf.

I lied, looks like they are "crossmember" back systems. Sorry, it's been awhile since I looked

I'm installing 2.5" exhaust in my '70 this weekend with an x pipe and Dynomax VT mufflers. We'll see how they sound. The mufflers were only $45 a piece shipped from Advance Auto with all the sales they've been having.

No worries, thanks. I've been looking for a 2.5" header back system and thought maybe I missed one which wouldn't be hard with all the aftermarket sites out there. I did see some that are OE manifold back but they are 2.25" to 2.5", which I could have cut and welded onto the collector flange but again they are 2.25" upstream then 2.5" downstream. Where it makes the change I don't know.

Having said that, I did see a 2.5" all the way back for (OE manifold back), for BB, would there be any difference with a SB?

If you are a side-pipe person, OBX makes a nice set that is pretty inexpensive...all stainless for under $700...

I bought the 17519, offset/offset. I also bought a set of the center outs and will use whichever fits. The offset Factory tips and spare tub make for a tight fit. I'll post a thread about them once they're installed.

Absolutley, there will be a differance. Maybe a set of hooker or headman collector extentions will get you from the collector to the crossmember. They have nice bends that might get you close. I will be using them in the 3" version, but I do not have the original crossmember.

Good Luck
