In my previous thread, Improved Sleeper, my uqestion was answered by you that a 383 was the way to go. My goal is to get as much torque and HP under the 5000 RPM range and make it still look stock.
Planning Comp Cam 262 Extreme Energy cam, to move torque peak down. I am leaning toward Dart 180 Iron Eagle heads.
Now, my question is, if I am stuck with a Performer intake (NOT Performer RPM) because I want to keep the stock air cleaner (77 L48) AND stock Rams Horns (currently 2 inch, could find 2-1/2 if worth it), would I be wasting money on AFR 180 heads, Trick FLow 195 heads, etc. Since I don't really push the RPM, and want to keep stock, is it building the wrong motor going with these high flow parts. THink is the cost is NOT that much more, but if its dollars wasted, I might as well keep it. If I was able to go with RPM intake and headers, I wouldn't even be asking, since it would be worth it.
If you are still limited to 5K, you might as well get a 400. As a truck engine, big tq and low rpms are what they do.
I have a 262 cam in my 350 w/TFS heads. I also have the crappy 2"
RHs. I just picked up the 2.5" RHs, I will let you know how they work.
Our engine Gurus will tell you that better flowing heads will make more power at every rpm, until they hit the limit of their flow.
I believe that is called "valve saturation" on head flow?
Some small port/big flow heads will make serious TQ in a 383.
In my reading of the usual car rags, the Edl rpm is better at all rpms.
You will only go so far w/Performer as a choke point. Think about a drop base for your air cleaner?
Unless you increase flow at the intake and the ex-manifolds, you will only gain so much. How much I can't say for sure, bt you will be limited on the top end.
If you don't want to (or can't) change the intake for better flow and also keep the stock rams horns, you are wasting your money getting AFR 180 heads, IMO.
weiand 8004 will work fine, low profile, larger plenum than 2101.
pick heads that offer the best intake flow at .500 for your budget. E-mail Tony at AFR and get his advice.
2 1/2 exhaust worth 20+ Hp.

This is what I was thinking. I don't need a race car, just want to get the most out of a stock looking 350. If it wasn't virtually as cheap to build a 383, I may not even bother with that. But, I really wonder even if a 383 will be choked by rams horns exhausts and a Performer intake manifold.
get the best heads you can afford.Tony Mamo is a great guy to deal with, super great porter.you can price out 383 rotating assemblies at summit or competition products starting at $500 and up.get good rods and rod bolts.
Get the heads....it will definitely help. Use the Performer..but cut plenum divider down a 1/2" or so. Do a search...David Freigburger from Hot Rod did some need videos of swapping the intakes and modifying them. Get the 2.5" ramshorns. Open them up as much as possible. Run 2.5" pipes.

What he said, to keep the "Stock look" use the "modified" performer, port match it to your AL head of choice, go 2.5 RH port match those as well (think about extrude hone or just clean up the castings inside the RH). Then paint the whole motor the proper engine color.
